Adoption Community & Seeking Belonging

This work inspired the founding of Root & Return Wellness. We provide therapy and guidance for adoptees, adoptive parents, and families exploring the many layers of identity, lineage, loss, and belonging. Led by Rachel Forbes, an adoptee herself, this space offers lived experience, empathy, and compassionate support, along with tools to explore your story with safety and depth. Healing here means finding harmony and empowerment within your story and remembering the width and depth of your truth.

Consultation & Training

We also support therapists and healing professionals who are ready to deepen their presence and expand their practice. Through clinical consultation, training, and mentorship, Rachel creates reflective spaces for therapists to explore adoption-competent, trauma-informed, and soul-centered ways of working. These offerings help clinicians strengthen confidence, integrity, and connection - both in their work and within themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions About Finding a Therapist in Connecticut

Our work is grounded in compassion, clinical depth, and soulful understanding. We believe that transformation unfolds not by fixing what is broken but by remembering what is already within, creating the conditions for connection and belonging in every part of life.

How do I find the right therapist?

Q

Finding the right therapist begins with a simple intake process, completing a short form and answering a few clarifying questions. When you reach out to us, we take the time to understand your specific needs, your history, and what you're hoping to experience in therapy. As our practice grows, we'll also connect with you directly to learn more about what you're looking for and match you with a therapist whose approach, training, and relational style align with your goals. We believe that the fit between you and your therapist is one of the most important foundations of meaningful healing, and as a top-rated therapist practice, we're here to make that process feel as gentle and supported as possible.

What therapy services do you offer?

Q

Root & Return offers a wide range of mental health therapy services as a trusted mental health clinic in Connecticut, including individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. Our therapists specialize in treating anxiety, depression, complex trauma, grief, life transitions, identity exploration, adoption-related experiences, codependency, family conflict, parenting, peer relationships, racial identity, self-esteem, stress, and women's issues.

We draw from evidence-based modalities including Internal Family Systems, Attachment-Based Therapy, Somatic and Mindfulness Practices, Polyvagal-Informed Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and Emotional Freedom Technique. Every treatment plan is tailored to the unique needs of the person or people we’re working with.

Do you offer couples therapy and family therapy?

Q

Yes. Some of our experienced therapists are trained to provide couples therapy and family therapy. These services are designed to help partners and families improve communication, navigate relationship challenges, and work through conflict in a supportive, non-judgmental space. Whether you're facing a specific issue or want to strengthen your connection, couples therapy can help you build healthier ways of relating. Family therapy focuses on the broader relational system, helping family members better understand one another and develop coping strategies together. We believe healing often extends into our most important relationships, and we're honored to support that work through the clinicians who offer these services.

Do you accept insurance, and what does it cover?

Q

We understand that accessible and affordable mental health treatment is essential, and we work to make our services as available as possible. Currently, our therapists accept Aetna, Anthem BCBS, Cigna, and Medicaid/Husky CT. Please note that insurance verification needs to happen directly with your therapist individually. We also offer sliding scale fees and out-of-pocket options, and our team is happy to walk you through what's available so cost doesn't become a barrier to getting the support you deserve.

What is the difference between a licensed professional counselor (LPC), a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT)?

Q

A licensed professional counselor (LPC), a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), and a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) are all licensed mental health professionals trained to provide counseling and therapy services. The main differences are in their educational background and areas of specialized training. An LCSW, like our founder Rachel Forbes, completes a Master of Social Work degree with clinical training that includes understanding systemic and environmental factors that affect mental and emotional health. An LPC typically holds a degree in counseling or a related field, with specialized training in therapeutic techniques for addressing a wide range of mental health concerns. An LMFT completes graduate-level training focused on relational dynamics and family systems, making them especially well suited for work with couples, families, and interpersonal issues. All three are qualified to provide high-quality care, and the best fit often comes down to the therapist’s experience, approach, and the type of support you’re seeking.

Do you offer online therapy or in-person sessions?

Q

At this moment in time, we offer online therapy. Online therapy provides flexibility and accessibility for those who prefer to attend therapy from home or whose schedules make in-person visits difficult.

Who can benefit from therapy at Root & Return?

Q

Anyone navigating emotional and mental health challenges, life changes, or a desire to grow can benefit from therapy. Our therapists are trained to help with a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, burnout, identity questions, relationship issues, and more. We hold particular depth around adoption-related experiences and attachment trauma, and we welcome individuals, couples, and families from all backgrounds. Whether you're new to therapy or have attended therapy before, our trauma-informed and non-judgmental approach is designed to help you identify what's getting in the way, develop coping strategies, and find your way back to yourself. It's important to find the right therapist in Connecticut who offers a safe space, and our therapists in CT are here to do that for you.

What if I'm in crisis or need emergency support?

Q

Root & Return Wellness does not provide emergency services. If you are in immediate crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988, where you'll be connected with a trained crisis counselor. You can also go to your nearest emergency room or call 911. We deeply care about your mental health and safety, and we encourage you to reach out to professional support right away if you are in need. Once you are safe and stable, we welcome you to connect with us about ongoing mental health services and professional support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

Q

Finding the right type of therapy depends on your unique mental health needs, your history, and what you're hoping to experience in the process. At Root & Return, we draw from a range of approaches, including somatic practices, attachment-based therapy, solution-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral frameworks, and psychodynamic methods, among others. During your first sessions, your therapist will work with you to understand your story and shape an approach that feels aligned with your goals. Our therapists provide integrative, personalized care, not a one-size-fits-all model, so that therapy can truly help you grow.

How much does therapy cost?

Q

Beyond the initial free 30-minute consultation, session rates vary by therapist and service type. Most 50-55 minute sessions range from $150 to $200, though rates may differ depending on the clinician and whether you are paying out of pocket or using insurance. Clients using insurance can pay anywhere from $0 to $150, depending on their plan. Longer or specialized sessions may vary slightly. We are committed to making high-quality mental health therapy as accessible as possible. We accept a number of insurance plans, and for those without coverage or with limited benefits, we are happy to discuss out-of-pocket options and sliding scale fees. We encourage you to reach out directly so we can find the right path forward together.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Q

Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of the therapeutic relationship and essential to creating the safe space you deserve. What you share in your sessions remains private. There are a small number of legally mandated exceptions, such as imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, which your therapist will explain clearly at the start of your work together. At Root & Return, we take your privacy seriously and are committed to upholding the highest ethical standards in everything we do.
