Therapeutic Techniques

Therapeutic Techniques Rooted in Presence, Guided by Integration

Integrative Therapy Techniques Used by Our Connecticut Therapists to Bring Healing to the Whole Person

Our therapy service is relational, experiential, and integrative. Every integrative therapist on our team blends evidence-based and holistic practices that honor the whole person and draw from different approaches and modalities that support curiosity, accompaniment, and liberation.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

IFS is a holistic approach to therapy that honors the natural multiplicity within each of us. It is based on the understanding that there are no “bad parts,” only parts that have taken on roles to help us survive and protect what feels vulnerable. Through this work, you learn to access your inner Self, a calm, compassionate, and confident presence that brings harmony and healing to every part of you and your relationships.

Attachment-Based Therapy

This approach deepens understanding of how early experiences shape the way we connect and communicate. It helps you recognize the patterns, thoughts, and feelings learned throughout your life and supports the creation of relationships that feel safer, healthier, and more secure in the present.

Somatic & Mindfulness Practices

Through mindfulness and body-based awareness, you learn to regulate your nervous system and connect with the wisdom of your body. The body becomes an anchor for safety and healing.

Polyvagal-Informed Therapy

This theory, developed by Stephen Porges, helps you understand how your nervous system responds to stress, supporting emotional regulation and a greater sense of calm and resilience.

Person-Centered Therapy

This approach creates a space of empathy and acceptance where you are fully seen and supported as the expert of your own experience.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT is a mind-body approach that combines gentle tapping with focused awareness to support emotional regulation and nervous system relief. It can help reduce the intensity of distressing emotions, release stored stress, and create a greater sense of safety and ease in the body.

The Work We Do

Frequently Asked Questions About Integrative Therapy in Connecticut

Our work is grounded in compassion, clinical depth, and soulful understanding. We believe that transformation unfolds not by fixing what is broken but by remembering what is already within, creating the conditions for connection and belonging in every part of life.

What are your rates for therapy?

Q

Beyond the initial free 30-minute consultation, session rates vary by therapist and service type. Most 50-55 minute therapy sessions range from $150 to $200, though rates may differ depending on the clinician and whether you are paying out of pocket or using insurance. (We've found that clients using insurance can pay from $0 to $150 depending on their plan.) Longer or specialized sessions may vary slightly.

How do I know which therapist is right for me?

Q

Once you complete our intake form, we review your needs and preferences to ensure you are matched with the therapist who feels like the best fit for your process. The nature of integrative therapy is flexible, meaning the therapist and client work together to shape an approach to therapy that truly fits. Every clinician on our team takes an integrative approach to care. You can also visit our Team page to learn more about each therapist or make a specific request.

How often will I come to therapy?

Q

Most clients begin with weekly therapy sessions, though frequency can shift over time. You and your therapist will decide together what rhythm best supports your growth and capacity.

Do you accept insurance?

Q

Yes. Root & Return Wellness accepts insurance, though coverage will depend on each clinician's credentialing and the insurance plans they are paneled with. For clients whose clinician is out of network with their plan, we can provide a superbill for potential reimbursement by your insurance company. We recommend checking your mental health benefits before beginning therapy to understand your specific coverage and out-of-network options. Insurance accepted by the therapist may vary, but typically we accept Medicaid/Husky, Aetna, Anthem BCBS, Cigna, UnitedHealthCare, and Connecticare.

What kinds of clients do you work with?

Q

We currently work with adults, couples, and families, navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, life transitions, challenges related to identity, low self-esteem, adoption-related experiences, and general inner exploration. While we hope to expand our services to younger clients in the future, we are not currently accepting child clients. Our integrative therapy services are designed to support many different types of experiences and different mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and trauma. Our work honors both the psychological and deeper inner dimensions of healing, and we welcome people of all intersectional identities, lived experiences, and spiritual beliefs.

What is integrative psychotherapy, and how does it differ from other types of therapy?

Q

Integrative psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that draws from different approaches rather than adhering strictly to one school of thought. Unlike traditional psychodynamic therapy practiced alone, psychotherapy integration combines the strengths of multiple frameworks. These include humanistic therapy, somatic practices, and attachment-based methods. Together, they create a truly personalized experience. Integrative therapy involves drawing techniques from various evidence-based traditions. This is what makes it flexible and inclusive by nature.

At Root & Return, integrative psychotherapy works because it allows each integrative therapist on our team to individualize treatment to your unique needs, rather than fitting you into a fixed model. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology and supported by peer-reviewed studies and controlled trial data consistently shows that integrative therapy is effective across a range of psychotherapy applications and different mental health conditions.

What is the difference between integrative therapy and eclectic therapy?

Q

Both integrative and eclectic therapy involve drawing from different types of psychotherapy, but there is a meaningful distinction. An eclectic therapist selects techniques from different frameworks based on what seems useful in the moment, while an integrative therapist follows a more intentional and theoretically grounded approach to treatment. Integrative therapy used at Root & Return is rooted in a coherent philosophy. It considers the whole person and shapes techniques around a deeper understanding of your story, patterns, and specific needs. Rather than applying different techniques arbitrarily, we take an integrative stance that weaves together the most relevant therapy approaches in a way that feels cohesive and purposeful.

What is talk therapy, and is integrative therapy a form of it?

Q

Yes. Integrative therapy is a type of talk therapy. In fact, it is one of the most flexible and inclusive forms of talk therapy available. Talk therapy encompasses a broad range of psychotherapy modalities. What makes integrative therapy distinct is that rather than staying within one tradition, it draws techniques from various schools to meet you where you are. Therapy may look different from session to session depending on what is most alive and relevant for you, and that adaptability is one of the core benefits of integrative therapy.

What mental health conditions can integrative therapy help with?

Q

Integrative therapy is flexible enough to be used to treat a wide range of mental health conditions. Our trauma-informed therapy and integrative therapy services are designed to support clients navigating anxiety, including depression, grief, relational trauma, life transitions, identity challenges, low self-esteem, and adoption-related experiences. The approach to treatment we use at Root & Return is shaped by the understanding that different mental health conditions call for different therapy techniques, which is why integrative therapy works so well across so many presenting concerns. A median number of theoretical orientations informs our work, reflecting the natural variance in psychotherapy that research recognizes as both common and effective among skilled clinicians. Our online therapy format makes these integrative therapy services accessible to clients throughout Connecticut.

How do I find an integrative therapist in Connecticut?

Q

To find an integrative therapist who is the right fit, it helps to look for a licensed clinician with training across multiple therapeutic traditions rather than a single approach. At Root & Return, every therapist on our team is trained to practice integrative therapy and draws from techniques from different therapeutic frameworks to meet your specific needs. The therapeutic alliance, the quality of the relationship between therapist and client, is one of the most important factors in how well therapy techniques work, and we prioritize that connection from the very first conversation. Whether you are new to therapy or have experience with different types of psychotherapy, we will help the therapist and client relationship feel grounded, safe, and purposeful from the start. Approaches as needed are adjusted throughout your process to ensure your care remains responsive and relevant.
